Bordering Nairobi's Mukuru slum, reputed to be one of the worst slums in the world, Marianists have established a small haven of hope in Our Lady of Nazareth Primary School (OLN). More than a school, it is a place where the children feel safe and secure, contrasted with the terrible and unsanitary conditions of the slum. The only way out is through education. In just nine years relying almost exclusively on donations from friends, the Marianists have managed to improve and enlarge the school, adding a library, computer lab and classrooms. Nearly 40% of the 1,500 students receive their only daily meal at OLN.
